Although there aren’t any hard figures, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that quite a few cellphones are broken each and every month. While that’s not too much of a shock, what’s more interesting is the wide variety of causes behind broken phones. To get an idea of what’s causing so many phones to end up at least temporarily inoperable, let’s go over the seven most common causes:

Dropping

If your phone isn’t in a case and you drop it while walking, it may not survive the fall. And even if it is in a case, it may not fare too well if the case isn’t overly durable. That reality is why it’s important to protect your phone with a rugged case and a strong screen protector.

Pockets

Your front pockets may seem like a safe place to keep your phone. But if you forget that the pocket you put your phone in also contains items like keys or loose change, you may get an unpleasant surprise when you pull your phone out. Scratches on the screen, back or both sides are all possibilities.

Toilet

Back in 2011, a survey found that 39% of people took their cellphone in the bathroom. It also found that 19% had dropped their phone in a toilet at least once. With the increase in Twitter and other social media usage, it only stands to reason that even more people are using their phone behind a locked door. So whether it’s in their back pocket or they knock it off the side of the sink, there are a lot of ways a phone can end up floating in a toilet bowl.

Sitting

Plenty of people prefer to keep their cellphone in their back pocket. Unfortunately, a toilet isn’t the only danger that storage location presents. Even though it won’t happen on every surface, it’s possible for a phone in your back pocket to break when you sit down. For example, if you plop down on the ground without realizing it’s concrete, you may pull out your phone and discover that its screen is cracked.

Stolen

The good news is both the iPhone and virtually all Android phones have a feature that allows you to track down your phone in the event it’s stolen. The bad news is even if you do successfully recover your phone, there’s a chance that it will have damage from the person who took it.

Pool

Whether they get pushed in or fall in on their own, no one wants to take a dip when their phone is still in their pocket. If this happens to you, the most important thing to remember is don’t turn it back on until it’s been checked out by a technician.

Unwanted Playing

From little kids to annoying friends, if someone grabs your phone and starts messing around with it, there’s a chance that they may cause internal or external damage to it.

If you go through the unfortunate experience of having your phone damaged in any of the above scenarios, be sure to give us a call at 703-850-7583 for prompt repair service!

Having a working cell phone is basically a requirement for being a member of modern society. Even if you aren’t all that into technology, you need a mobile phone to keep in touch with all your friends and family. Additionally, a working cell is a key requirement for many jobs.

While it’s pretty much impossible to get away with not having a phone, that doesn’t mean you should have to pay an arm and a leg for it. If you want to spend less on your phone and its mobile plan, here are five tips to help you save:

Review Your Bill on a Regular Basis

Cell phone providers are technically required to inform you of any increases to your bill. But because they can bury that information in a long update letter, the best thing to do is look over your bill every few months and confirm that you know exactly what you’re paying for.

Bundle

Getting on a plan with one or more of your family members may allow you to significantly reduce what you have to pay for cell service each month.

Reconsider Extras

Although monthly extras like insurance may seem like a good deal, that’s not always the case. If you’re paying for extras that you haven’t really thought about, it’s worth carefully analyzing them to see if they’re something you truly need.

Text for Free

With free apps like Google Voice, you can lower or completely eliminate paying a monthly fee for texting without reducing the number of texts that you send.

Don’t Buy a New Phone

Out of all the costs associated with owning a cell phone, the most expensive is the cost of the phone itself. While carriers will often subsidize the cost of a new phone when you sign a two-year contract with them for the first time, if you try to buy another phone during that period, you’ll likely be shocked at the true cost. Not only can devices like the Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy cost over $500, but even a decent phone with basic features will run you several hundred dollars.

Because buying a phone is so expensive, a great way to save money is to not buy a new one. Although that may seem easy when your phone is working fine, what happens if it gets damaged? The good news is even though you may think a damaged phone is going to result in you paying a hefty price for a different one, there’s another option.

Before going out and spending lots of money because your current phone isn’t working properly, give us a call at 703-850-7583. Whether you dog chewed on your phone, it got dropped in water or you have a cracked screen that makes it nearly impossible to do anything, we have the training, experience and tools necessary to fix a wide range of damage.

Since our customers are often amazed by what we’re able to repair, even if your phone seems like it’s in really bad shape, it’s worth getting in touch with us to see if we can help!

If you sit down and watch TV for an hour, chances are you will see an iPhone ad from Apple or a commercial from AT&T advertising iPhone service. While the iPhone is definitely a cool device, the problem is it can easily cost $120 or more a month to use it with an AT&T service plan. What’s really frustrating about being on this type of plan is it doesn’t even cover unlimited usage. Although that price point does include unlimited text messaging, it only provides 4GB of data. If you were a subscriber and went over that amount, you’d pay $10 per additional GB that you used!

Since $1440+ is a significant annual cost for a plan that’s not unlimited, you may feel that it’s a ripoff. Because you’re far from being the only person who feels that way, there are several companies who have decided to offer completely unlimited plans. Not only do these plans let you talk, text, email and surf as much as you want, but they’re available for less than half of what’d you likely pay for one of AT&T’s iPhone plans. If you want the most bang for your buck, here are the best unlimited cell phone plans for less than $60 a month:

Cricket

This company is no stranger to unlimited cell plans. They’ve been providing their customers with this option for over a decade. While you can get an unlimited calling plan for just $30 a month, if you want to enjoy a fully unlimited plan, their rate is still at the attractively low price of $60 a month. The one thing to keep in mind is that if you travel a lot, Cricket may not be a good fit for you. The reason is if you go over the 100 roaming minutes that are included with their $60 plan, you will be charged an additional $0.25 per roaming minute.

Virgin Mobile

Although Richard Branson is incredibly wealthy, that doesn’t mean he’s greedy. Virgin’s fully unlimited plan is available for just $55 a month. This includes email and Internet browsing at 3G speeds. An additional benefit of choosing Virgin is they don’t charge any fees for account activation, roaming or early termination.

Boost Mobile

When Boost Mobile claims to offer an unlimited plan, they aren’t exaggerating. Not only does their flat $50 a month plan cover unlimited talking, texting and data usage, but it also covers the various regulatory fees and taxes that other carriers tack on to their totals. What’s even cooler about Boost is that for every 6 payments that are made on time, Boost will knock $5 off their monthly fee. This can eventually bring their unlimited plan all the way down to just $35 a month!

Metro PCS

If you want the cheapest unlimited plan available, Metro PCS delivers at $40 a month. Just keep in mind that like Cricket, Metro PCS charges for roaming. If you’re thinking about this plan, check to make sure that you live and work in area that is fully covered by this company.

Because texting and driving has been a heated issue for over half a decade, the editor of Car and Driver magazine decided to get to the bottom of it. In 2009, he took part in a test to see just how dangerous it is to text while driving. Since there’s no argument that drinking and driving is extremely dangerous, he decided to compare the two activities. What he found is being intoxicated added four feet to the distance it took him to go from 70 mph to a full stop. Amazingly, performing the same action while texting took seventy feet. In terms of this experiment, texting was over 15 times more dangerous than being drunk while driving!

Dangerous and Illegal

It’s easy to tell yourself that you can handle sending a text while you’re driving. However, just because you can avoid a wreck doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. If you live in one of the 35 states where texting while driving is illegal, you could be pulled over and fined for using your phone to text while you’re behind the wheel of a car.

Currently, the only states where it’s legal to text while driving are Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and West Virginia. It’s important to note that even if you live in one of these states, there still may be laws that impact your ability to text while driving. For example, in:

  • Alabama, it’s illegal for a driver who’s under 17 and has less than 6 months of experience to use a cellphone at all
  • Hawaii, every county has enacted some form of a distracted driving ordinance
  • Texas, it’s illegal to use a cellphone while in a school zone

Even If It’s Legal, There’s No Reason to Risk It

Although you may live in one of the handful of states where it is legal to text while driving, that doesn’t mean it’s something you should do. Since the dangers to you and anyone else on the road are real, it’s in your best interest to avoid this activity. While you may think that is easier said than done, the good news is you can keep yourself safe without completely giving up this often time-sensitive task.

If you have a new iPhone, you can use Siri to read and compose texts by using voice commands. This eliminates the need to hold your phone or take your eyes off the road. And while it hasn’t received as much media attention as Siri, every Android phone has Voice Actions that allow you to compose a text message without any finger typing. The one caveat with Android is you do have to physically press the Send button once you’ve finished dictating your text.

While some advocates want cellphone usage completely banned from cars, using this form of technology is still a better option than holding a cellphone and looking down at it while texting. Siri or Voice Actions provide a realistic way to balance your desire to communicate and the need for you to stay safe while on the road!
